2/365- I Wish We Were Butterflies

digital painting of a butterfly feeding on flower
Project 365- I Wish We Were Butterflies

I almost wish we were butterflies and liv'd but three summer days - three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.

Capricious Monarch- Digital Art by Tracey Grumbach

Capricious Monarch- Digital Art by Tracey Grumbach

Happiness, do not leave me.
I know you, a capricious monarch
perching on the fortunate flowers you see.
Hear me:
I am too attached to this royalty now.
Can I make you rest here somehow?
I will offer you the nectar of every flower in blossom,
the honey of every fruit in harvest.
I will make the Earth a garden,
the entire universe a forest.
I beg of you not to flutter by.
I beg of you not to leave me, butter-coloured fly.
Nest here
and for you,
I will create a home.
―Kamand Kojouri

"Happiness, please nest here...I will create a home."  This poem really hit me in the heart today and since I have no other words, I thought it would pair nicely with this image.

I hope you have an wonderful Tuesday.

Impression of an Anemone

When you adopt the viewpoint that there is nothing that exists that is not part of you, that there is no one who exists who is not part of you, that any judgment you make is self-judgment, that any criticism you level is self-criticism, you will wisely extend to yourself an unconditional love that will be the light of the world.”

– Harry Palmer

As promised on Facebook yesterday, if you'd like to the have the below bird brush I created for photoshop, please feel free to get it here. I hope you let me know if you use it (not required) and show me what you came up with.

That's all I have to say for today. I hope everyone extends the kind of love to others today that they want and deserve themselves. Have a beautiful and blessed day.

Please send some good vibes today as I am seeing an oral surgeon again about the infection in my jaw that keeps returning. Please pray for answers and healing. Thank you!

Pink Gerbera Daisy

I thought this beautiful pink Gerbera might cheer you up on this gray, gross day...day 4 of rain and mud in the past week. How can one not smile when looking into this beautiful flower face?

The Gerbera daisy is one of my favorite flowers. I've tried growing them a few times and have failed miserably, so I have resorted to getting them in bouquets when I can. They make me happy.

Using a photo I took of one such bouquet recently as a reference, I decided to do a digital painting. I love how it turned out and just may get it printed for my youngest daughter's room.

Have a wonderful Thursday!

The World Is Such a Small Place

Time and time again I am reminded just how small the world is. The other day on a real estate shoot, I was greeted by the owners as I entered their house. The male looked very familiar to me, but then again a lot of people look familiar to me, so I didn't say anything.

About 15 minutes into the shoot, after chatting a while with the couple as I moved room to room, the gentleman says, "Did you used to be a teacher?"

Stunned, because yes indeed, I did used to be a teacher, I said, "YES! You look familiar...were you a teacher?" In my prior life, in 1994 to be exact, I graduated from Towson University and moved to Harford County to teach elementary school.

"No," he said. But maybe you taught my children.  Where did you teach?"
After telling him the locations where I've taught he informed me that his kids never attended any of those schools, so that couldn't be it.

I continued on my way through their house, shooting each room, until during another discussion I mentioned that I used to live in Abingdon, the same general location where this house was.  "Really?" he said. "Where about?"

"Box Hill," I replied.

"Ha!" he said. "I did too!"

"Maybe that is why you look familiar," I said.

"Maybe." he said. But he still didn't sound convinced.

Finally, toward the end of the shoot, he asked, "Did you used to tutor by any chance?"

"Yes!" I said. "I ran my own tutoring business for 13 years!" After I stayed home to raise my children, I began tutoring children to make ends meet. I ran my business for 13 years and loved it.

He laughed and said, "I figured it out. You tutored my daughter years and years ago!  The funny part is that it wasn't your face that looked familiar. Your voice gave it away."

"My voice?" I questioned.

"Yes. You have a teacher-voice. It's not bad, but very distinct. I wouldn't forget that voice anywhere. I remember you were a very good tutor and you had a very specific way of teaching and you were strict about how she did her work."

I laughed. "Yes, I had a specific method that was proven to help kids. I hope I was able to help her and that she was successful."

"Yes, she is. She graduated college, is doing well, and is now getting her masters."

It is so funny how people come in and out of your life. It turns out that his ex-wife and the mother of his daughter that he was referring to, contacted me the day after this. He must've told her that he ran into me and she reached out to me with an email. She told me that she and her daughter also have chronic Lyme disease and have found success with their treatment. She offered for me to join a Facebook page of a friend of hers who runs a support/information group for Lyme disease sufferers. I know these people were brought back into my life for a reason and am thankful to hear how a former student of mine is doing.

Life is good, is it not?

Have a beautiful Monday and happy MLK day!

Impression of Sunflower

Digital drawing/painting of a sunflower- iPhone and desktop used for this creation

It's crazy how excited I am becoming about homeschooling.  After months of contemplation about what was best for my kids and for our family as a whole, the decision was finally made several weeks ago to go for it.  Since then my mind has let go of the anxiety of the decision making and my heart has embraced the joy of this journey I am about to take with my kiddos.  Many of you may not know that I actually have a degree in teaching, so this is right up my alley.  My two loves in life are teaching and art.  Now I get to do both while getting to spend time with my little people and get to learn more about them as human beings.  How lucky am I?

I ordered a curriculum that will cover all of the academic subjects for the kids, but this program is a bit weak in the music and art department.  So, I set out to create my own music and art curriculum and I have finished planning my first music unit...Introduction to the Orchestra.  I know less than nothing about music, so this is a learning experience for me as well.  I utilized free materials from my library (which is awesome, by the way)...books, cd's, movies, websites, etc. to complete this unit and I have planned a trip to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with the kids so they can see the real artistry in action!  This is so exciting.  I am in heaven!

In addition, we have joined a Homeschool Co-Op and I will be teaching middle and high schoolers photography...studying the science and art of photography as well as studying famous photographers and their work! I am even thinking about having them at the end of the class put on an exhibit! Are you kidding me?  This is my life?  What joy I have in sharing this gift with other homeschool kids!  I finally feel with this decision, everything I've wanted for my kids, my family, and myself is finally falling into place.  Homeschool, teaching, art, photography, music, learning, being with my kids daily...pure bliss.  I. Can. Not. Wait.

Remind me I said that when I am overwhelmed and the kids are on my last nerve.  I might be excited, but I am not naive about how it will be.  I know it won't all be rainbows and unicorns.  But life never is...we will just take it one day at a time and I will keep reminding myself how incredibly blessed I am to have this opportunity.

Now, if my health would just fall in line, life would be pretty darn perfect.  :)

Taking Time to Rest

Tired.

After weeks of going, going, going, it has caught up to me.  I'm so tired.  Exhausted.  Toast.

So much is happening right now and I am having trouble keeping up with it all emotionally and physically.

My brain and body have been in overdrive for over a month and frankly, I just need a chance to catch up.  But life doesn't work that way.  Coming up I have my son's graduation, my daughter's 16th birthday,  the one year anniversary of my father's death (I find myself falling into melancholy the closer it creeps), construction of the house and office/studio, and preparing for a huge life change that will be happening this summer.  Everyone has their dishes full, I know this, so I am not complaining, I just need to find some time to rest and take care of me.  I've been doing so well with Lyme recovery, I don't want to send myself backward.

So, I think today I will do just that.  I think I will sleep.  I think I will rest.  I think I will do just about nothing.  I haven't done that in so long and this is the only day that I have where I can do that.  I'm taking the opportunity!

Hoping wherever you are it is a beautiful day.  If it's not, make it one.

Embrace Your Uniqueness

I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness. Because just like a rose is beautiful, so is a sunflower, so is a peony. I mean, all flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that's like women too.
Miranda Kerr

And here we are at Friday again.  TGIF!  Another busy day filled with real estate shoots, a quick drop in to The Gallery at 122 Main, and then back to my home office to edit!  This evening I am looking forward to seeing Dirty Dancing live at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore.  Perhaps I will take along my camera tonight to shoot a bit before the show.  Maybe not...I might have my fill of cameras by the time I head out tonight.  We'll see.

I loved this quote by Miranda Kerr.  Uniqueness...what makes you stand out from others?  What gives you that certain beauty that no one else seems to have?  I believe it is a difficult question for most women to answer because our society has pigeon-holed beauty into such a tiny almost unattainable list of traits that have nothing to do with real women.   I think it is interesting that when women are interviewed about what beauty is, they normally will answer with physical characteristics. When men are interviewed about what makes a woman beautiful, many often give internal traits, character traits, as it were, as an answer.  Women are so worried about their outside appearances to impress men, yet most men are looking for good values in a woman.  That is not to say that we shouldn't take care of ourselves and care nothing about our appearances.  It just means that we as women need to give ourselves a break and teach our girls that the inside is way more beautiful than the outside.

I am working hard with my two girls to make them see that clothes, make-up, and physical characteristics don't make a woman beautiful.  It is the inner qualities that shine through that make a woman glow and attract others to be in her company.  It is not an easy battle to fight with all the media bombardment they get from society, but it is a worthwhile fight that begins with me.  I had to change how I saw myself before I could teach my girls to judge themselves by their insides, not their outsides.

For this piece, I was first inspired by the above quote and then I found this vintage photograph to begin working with.

Next, I colorized her arms and hair in photoshop.  Then I took an image of the flower and merged the two into a collage, painting and merging her body into the shape of the flower.  I didn't like the image quality of the face in this original photo, so I found another vintage photo of a woman that had better image quality and used that to paint the features onto the our flower woman's face.  Once I had everything the way I wanted it, I imported the flattened file into Painter and used oil brushes to paint the overall image.  Back in Photoshop, I then layered the painted file with several textures to create the crackled, texturized image in the background.  I also cloned the middle of the flower and replaced the stars in her headband with the center of the flower since it felt a little Wonder Woman to me with stars.  Next, I tweaked colors, shading, and levels and then it was complete.  I hope you all like it!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

The Heart Finds Its Morning

"For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed."
~Khalil Gibran

This macro of a hibiscus flower is the second piece that will be showing in the April show at The Gallery at 122 Main.  It is matted and framed and it measures 18 x 15 inches for its completed size.  The cost will be $80.00.  I don't know about you, but I am attracted to flowers because they do refresh me and remind me of the beautiful, intricate world all around me.  I love surrounding myself with flowers and try to treat myself at least once a month to a bouquet to brighten up my living space. During summer, I love having hanging baskets all along the porch line, celebrating the season.

In case you missed the post about the first piece that will be in the show, Promising Too Much, you can click on the link and see that one as well.  Just like that macro of a rose bud, this print is also for sale at my website.  I am only offering these prints in one size and that is  8" x 12 " prints for $31.90. You can also add a lustre coating and a mat board for a small additional cost.  You can find these prints at nineacresdesigns.com under the Portfolio>Plant Kingdom tab.  These prints will only be available for a limited time, so hurry!

Thanks so much for all the support I've received from everyone!  It is an exciting time and I appreciate all the love from everyone!  Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Cone Flower

Today I really don't feel like being thankful.
I don't feel like counting my blessings.
All I want to do is cry all day and feel sorry for myself.
As I am gathering more and more information about Lyme
and the co-infections that go with it,
(I can NOT believe with the wealth of information out there
no one in the last two years picked up what I had...
it now seems so incredibly obvious)
I feel like I am at the base of Mt. Everest
with no provisions, no map, no energy, or understanding
of how to climb this massive range that divides me
from the healthy life that surely awaits me on the other side.
How will I scale this impossible mountain?
And yet I know the answer...one baby step at a time...
one muscle twitching, pain inducing, headache pounding, nauseating, exhausting
baby step at a time.
There will be backslides and falls and stumbles along the way
but I will make it.
I have to keep telling myself that there is a quality of life worth doing this for
on the other side of that mountain.

Today I am thankful for something so mundane and little
that most people would laugh at being thankful for this.
I am thankful that I had the energy today to put away the laundry.
I hate when it is sitting out reminding me that I can't put it away,
that I can't muster the energy or pain-free movement to pick up laundry and put it away...
so getting that completed today made me feel less guilty about giving my body
the rest it so needs to begin the battle against these horrible bugs inside me.

Ready to Unfurl

Today I am thankful for my beautiful 15 year old daughter
who brings such joy and laughter to my life.
She is such an amazing person with a huge, kind heart,
a humble, strong, quiet, self confidence
and a smart, creative brain with ideas that still fascinate me.
Why God decided to bless me with this gift that is her 15 years ago,
I will never know, but I am honored to be her mother.

My relationship with all my children is so unique and equally as fulfilling,
but when I imagined having a teenage daughter,
I couldn't even begin to dream about a connection this close or rewarding.
Happy Birthday, my beautiful Ladybug!
May you always have the best in life
and stay the sweet, caring person you are.
It is a joy watching you unfurl from a shy little girl
into this beautiful, confident woman.
One day you will change the world with your words.
You may already have...

Daisy in the Rain

Today I am thankful for my garden and the beautiful,
life giving rain we had yesterday.
My garden was covered in leftover raindrops,
like tears caressing one's cheek,
slowly sliding off the petals to the ground below.
It was so quiet and serene with the skies still overcast
acting like a gigantic soft box.
Don't you love how the colors of the world POP after the rain;
the water magnifying the magnificence of Nature's palette?
Some hate the rain,
but I actually find it comforting.
It makes the sun afterward that much more enjoyable.
